The Inca Trail trek is considered and rated from moderate to challenging hike.
A minimum hike experience and and a reasonable fitness are essential and required.
1 or 2 nights in Cusco or on the Sacred Valley for acclimatization are recommended.
Visit your doctor and have a complete medical check over before booking this hike.
The fitter and more prepared you are, the more you will enjoy your trek, please take some time do some training. Ensure you keep well hydrated. Walk each day with a relaxed, happy attitude.

If you are not prepared for a 4 day hike, the 2 Day short hike, 3 Day Sacred Valley and Short Inca Trail version which are still great and impressive experiences and it demands much less effort. If you do not want to worry about the height or physical effort that these treks demand then enjoy a train ride, take it easy and relax, simply book an overnight tour by Expedition train, Deluxe Vistadome Train tour or the exclussive super luxe Bingham Train and have an early guided tour then explore the citadel in your own for classic pictures. (80% visit by train, 20% hike the trail).
On Day 1 walk is for 4-5 Hrs, Day 2 walk is for 7-8 Hours, Day 3 walk is for 7-8 hours Day 4 walk is for 3-4 hours. Recommended age for classic Inca Trail is from 11 to 69 y/o.

Program Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Cusco at any time,Transfer from the Airport to the Hotel in the centre of Cusco.

Reception in Cusco airport and Transfer to Marqueses Boutique Hotel where they will welcome you with cups of coca leaf tea a traditional drink to minimize the effects of altitude, Relax,rest and acclimatize. We advise you to get an early flight so you can just spend your first 2 hours in Cusco seriously doing nothing but trying to breathe!! Optional:At 13:45 pm A Guided Cusco City Tour, Excursion, visiting Koricancha "The Sun Temple" the golden Inca`s temple that impressed so much to the first Spanish conquistadores when they arrived in 1534,Cusco main Cathedral with their exquisite canvas from the Cuzqueña Painting School, chapels, Virgins and Saints, Saqsayhuaman Inca Complex, where every year in June in the winter solstice in this hemisphere the young Cuzqueños perform the old and traditional Feast of the Sun "Inti Raymi" in honor to the Sun, then we visit Tambo Machay, Qenqo and Puca-Pucara. Or free afternoon and maybe go to Cusco Folk Dances and Music at Cusco Art Center in the main Avenue El Sol (A block before the Post Office) which are included on your tourist ticket, the show start at 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm located at 10 minutes walk from Hotel Marqueses.

Day 2.- Sacred Valley Tour, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chincheros.Hotel Marqueses.
At 8.00 am meet at SAS Travel office or transfer from your hotel at an earlier time if coordinated. In a tourist bus, we travel from Cusco past Saqsaywaman & Tambomachay, over the mountains toward the Sacred Valley. We descend 1,500 feet to the valley floor of the sacred Urubamba river and the village of Pisac where we will visit a traditional market and you can buy some local souvenirs. We then drive up to explore the extensive ruins of Pisac with stunning views over the valley. On the guided walk into the Citadel of Pisac you can observe temples, residences, altars, channels, carvings, tunnels/caves and the famous Intihuatana “The hitching post of the Sun", For those who would prefer to spend more time in the market instead of visiting the ruins, advise your guide so he can organize a time and place to pick you up when returning through the market. We continue on to Urubamba where we stop for you to buy lunch. A further 30 mins drive takes us to Ollantaytambo surrounded by the sacred mountains, where we will again discover the magnificence of the Incan constructions, the amazing temple of the Sun, enormous blocks of rock perfectly carved and polished, stone water fountains, stairs, terraces and the beauty of the local people in their traditional dress, all surrounded by the sacred mountains and Valley of Patacancha and Willoq. On our return, we quickly visit the famous church and archeological site in Chincheros, arriving to Cusco at about 6:00 pm 6.30 pm.

Day 3 to Day 6.- Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. 8 Kg personal porter service included.

Day 6.- Arrive to Machu Picchu. Guided visit, time to explore. Return to Cusco.
Early arrive to Machu Picchu, we will leave our last campsite by 5:00 am 2 hours walk approximately to arrive to Intipunku, the famous Gate of the Sun, place from which you can have the first view of the citadel, this marvelous sanctuary in the middle of mountains, cloud forest and clouds. A guided tour led by your guide to the entire citadel until midday, Bus down to Aguas Calientes town and by 4 pm train return to Cusco - 4 hours ride, transfer from Train Station to Marqueses Hotel.

Day 7.- Free time to enjoy Cusco. Afternoon. Transfer to the Airport or Bus Terminal.
Free time to enjoy Cusco and later on according to your flight return to Lima, transfer from Hotel to the Airport.

  • Time for the hot springs in Aguas Calientes? Yes you will have, very recommended and really good for your legs and body... another 10 minutes extra walk but worth it.
  • Tips for porters and staff.- It is not mandatory but it is a tradition on Inca Trail.
  • Hot shower on the Inca Trail hike ? Only at the first camping site.

  • When do I need to book to confirm my Inca Trail permits? Permits for Classic Inca Trail trek are limited and must be reserved and booked (6-2 months before or in advance the date of your desired date -especially in the high season from May to August (6-3 months before for other months). Make sure to spend a couple of nights in Cusco in order to acclimate before your trek. This 4 or 5 Day Trek can be also booked with our MULTIDAY TOURS with INCA TRAIL We strongly recommend a visit to your doctor and dentist before your holiday. You must ask your doctor about current inoculation requirements. During your trek, you are under the control of your tour guide and that leader has the authority to determine your suitability to continue with your trek.

  • How to confirm my permits and How to pay a booking deposit ? Online bookings are essential on our webpage, click on the page of the desired tour, fill out with the requested details as a mandatory (Name and surname, passport number, age, and nationality) -your registered data is protected in our secured and encrypted website, (all passengers require a valid passport -valid for at least 6 months beyond the conclusion of their trip. Students until 26 years old must send us a copy of the valid University card via email, Childs must send us a copy of passport.   • Inca Trail 4 Days/ 4Nights with Huaynapicchu Mt.:This is exactly the same 4 Day/3Night tour but the advantage is you can spend few more hours on the entire Day 4th till 5pm in Machu Picchu site, walk Huaynapicchu Mt you can relax in the hot springs of Aguas Calientes in the evening and the package includes your dinner on Day 4 and your breakfast on Day 5th plus an accommodation -based in a double room.  The train journey is incredibly beautiful so you want to be able to appreciate this in daylight hours, the train will depart Aguas Calientes just before 9:00 am and arrives to Ollantaytambo at 11.30 am then you can enjoy visiting Ollantaytambo before taking a bus to Cusco from here. Transport to Cusco not included you can get there for 15 Soles pp. (You can include as well a walk to Huanapicchu Mt on Day 4 th).   • What is the Special 4th Night in Aguas Calientes without Huaynapicchu Mt ?Inca Trail 4D/4Nights Group Service is the regular Inca Trail 4d/3n plus 1 night (based on double/triple accommodation) in Aguas Calientes in Hotel Viajeros. It is a great way to take advantage of the relaxing jungle ambiance of Aguas Calientes. There are more trails to venture on for further exploration including the Putukusi Trail, where the summit offers an amazing view of the immense site and Huayna Picchu Mountain. Or to wind down after a grueling trek, soak in the natural hot springs for 15 soles. The soothing, naturally heated waters are said to possess healing properties.   • Inca Trail plus Huaynapicchu mt. and Aguas Calientes town 5 Days/ 4Nights.- We definitely believe that if you are doing the Inca Trail trek and also want to climb Huayna Picchu Mt then this is the best value. This trip is hiking the classic 4 Day Trail trek, stay overnight in Aguas Calientes, enjoy he hot springs, on Day 5 th re-enter to Machupicchu and walk Huayna Picchu Mt. This is especially a good opportunity in the wet season giving you a second opportunity to see Machu Picchu. Afternoon Train returns to Cusco arriving around 8:00 pm (Guide, bus tickets, lunch on Day 5th are not included). The cost is $85.00 pp or $45.00 pp with a valid University student card (you must send us a scanned copy of your university card asap).
  • Will I be able to witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu? In truth, it is not a typical sunrise. As long as you don´t have too much mist or low cloud then you see the first light illuminating Machu Picchu. It is after dawn though as the sun must rise up over the high mountains surrounding Machu Picchu.  
  • How long am I able to stay at Machu Picchu? How I will I get down to Aguas Calientes? You will have a guided tour of the ruins that lasts approximately 2-3 hours, after which time you will have 2-3 hours more to spend on your own. You can climb Huayna Picchu att 11:00 am (reservation and new pay required $85 pp) or just explore. After the guided portion, your guide will give you a bus ticket for the transfer down to Aguas Calientes. You can take the bus anytime you like. We will be serving a buffet lunch in Aguas Calientes town at Hotel Viajeros starting at 1.45 pm so that is something to keep in mind. If you choose to skip lunch, then you just need to be down in time for your train ride at 14:30 pm at the latest. Train leave at 14:55 pm  /  2nd train at 16:22pm  
  • What is the easiest way to reach Cusco.- Get a flight from Lima (Peru´s capital city) located at the coast near Pacific Ocean at  0  -cero meters, there are several air companies as Latam, Avianca, Star Peru, Peruvian Airlines it takes 1 hour (most of the flights are early in the morning and afternoon).  Bus from Lima to Cusco takes 24 Hrs  (Cruz del Sur, Oltursa and Civa recommends bus companies if you have plenty of time and your desire is explore the coast). 
  • Am I able to change dates after the initial reservation?  Not. Once we have confirmed your booking and we have paid for your permits, it is not possible to change the assigned date into another day or replace it with a new person (change of passengers) -note permits are personal, non-transferable and non-refundable. Usually, we need to purchase permits for trekkers and group porters immediately, due to limited available spots and the high demand for permits, after your deposit is paid -depending on the urgency of the situation. The only time that we don’t get them within a few days is if you have reserved a date more than 8-6 months ahead of time. If we already have your permit, and you would like to go in a different date we do must reserve and purchase a new permit and start a new reservation process with your new desired date. 
  • What if do not have my passport right now? The Park officers require to see a valid passport (check out with your embassy), If you don`t have an updated passport, in the meantime due to limited permits, you can book the tour with your old passport number and details, then you must send us via email your new passport number and details.  (You must bring both of your passports, your old passport, and a new passport.)   
  • What are the benefits of doing a private trek? One of the main reasons why a private trek is sought after is because you do not need to worry about which dates we have departures set for. You can choose almost any date that you would like to start the trek, this is recommended for families, a group of friends so you can walk at your own pace and enjoy a private small group size. In addition to the convenience and flexibility in booking, the private option provides a more personal trip experience for your group. We will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. The guide will focus all of his energy and attention on your group. You can also be more specific about the food that you would like to be served during the trek. It is a truly wonderful experience to go on such an amazing journey with only your friends and loved ones. Ask a SAS Rep how you can arrange your own private tour.
  • What is a University student card? How can I use it to get a discount? University student cards with a valid expiration date marked stands and it is accepted. (Only admitted until 26 years old). Please send us a copy in a scanned email at the time of your booking, otherwise, it is impossible to get a student permit.  The discount that is offered isn’t a SAS Travel discount but is actually offered by the INC and SAS Travel passes the discount on to you. For that reason, it absolutely necessary that we have a scan of your card “in hand” when we go to purchase your permits. If you didn’t send us a copy of it along with the initial booking, then make sure to note on the registration form that you have one and will send the scan as soon as possible so that we know to try and wait before we purchase the permit.
  • Can I pay for the entire tour up front? Usually, we require to pay a booking deposit of $300 pp plus 5%. The balance must be paid on your arrival to Cusco in US$ cash.  If you choose to pay with credit/debit card you need to pay 8% extra. The prices of the tours are for cash payment.  You can withdraw US$ out of the ATMs or banks in Cusco. If you would like to pay in full for your tour up front you can pay in our website with your reservation code adding the 5% extra card fee.
  • I have forgotten how to pay for my reservation so I can confirm.  How can I pay online?     It is very important that you pay an online deposit for your reservation immediately as permits could run out if you do not do so immediately.  You normally just follow the instructions at the time but if you have let some time lapse then please enter this site to make your deposit of $300 per person plus 5%  or pay your remaining final balance.   • Arrive in Cusco and check-in at the Cusco SAS Travel office.-  We assume most people try to arrive in Cusco 2-3 days before the trek to allow adequate time for acclimatization and a buffer in case of transport delays.  Once you have settled in and rested you must come to the Cusco office to view and reconfirm the information we have pertinent to your trek, personal requirements and sign the conditions (even if you have already paid in full.) There are occasions when local holidays or unrest may require last-minute changes to departure times or some additional information and so we have a short briefing at 7:00 pm the night before your trek when you meet your guide and other group members. 
  • Where can I store my luggage while I am trekking?  Most hotels and hostels in town offer a storage service in Cusco, for your tour you must only bring things you really will need and leave the rest of your belongings in Cusco. SAS Travel offers free luggage storage for all of our hikers at Hotel Marqueses (Calle Garcilaso  265), located near SAS Travel office. You can then pick up your bags up from the storage at any time after you return from your trek (the hotel is open 24 hours). or even better if you stay in this lovely colonial house. 
  •  B.- BEFORE YOU GO.-
  • What is INCLUDED in the price of the tour?  Basically all components for 4 Days are included (SAS Travel private Transport to the trailhead -Km 82, Entrance Fees to the Trail and Machu Picchu, Group porters to carry clients tents (2 or 3 people tents -upon your request.), Fresh food and cooking equipment, stove, table and benches, Full board meals, Expert guides, Cooks, Bus to Aguas Calientes, Lunch in Aguas Calientes, Expedition Train return to Cusco).  Not included.- A warm sleeping bag, if you don´t want to bring yours you can hire with us, (US$25 for the trip, 4 seasons warm sleeping bag, mummy shape and have a clean bed sheet), a personal porter to carry a roll mattress, sleeping bag and your clothes in total for 8 Kg also can be hired US$80 ( a duffle bag is provided, then you just need a daypack to carry your personal staff). The rest of your belongings need to be stored in your hotel in Cusco or in our Hotel Marqueses free storage.
  • Where are the Departure points for our Treks?  Pick up from your hotels from 05:30 am (we recommend you to have breakfast in your hotel, most hotels offer breakfast or pack breakfast). Meeting departure point at Hotel Marqueses at 05:45 am (located near SAS Travel office) we depart at 05:45 am, (please provide clear contact details of your accommodation in Cusco at your check-in at our office). Your guides will provide the procedure`s details of pick up times at the -briefing session the night before of you trek depart.

  • I don`t have a good sleeping bag.  Can I rent one?  YES, you can just organize it at the time of booking.  Down sleeping bag minus 8º Celcius US $ 25.00, 45 Lts Backpack US$ 20.00,  A pair of trekking poles US$ 20.00
  • Personal porter for 8 Kg US$ 80.00 (Half shared porter) or hire a shared personal porter for 6 Kg for $ 60 Dollars for the entire trek.
  • I don`t have a sleeping mattress.  Do I need one?  We include in the cost of the tour the loan of a sleeping mat for the duration of the trek. This is a fairly thick bulky mat that weighs 1 kg and we still say if you are traveling with a thermal-rest or technologically advanced type of sleep mat then definitely bring that instead. Also you can hire a thermal-rest mattress for extra $20 for the trip.
  • How much does the sleeping mat and sleeping bag weigh?  Sleep foam pad mattress weight = 1 kg and Sleeping bag weight = 2-5 kg. Total 3.5 Kg
  • I am on my own, will I have someone to share a tent with? Yes, another person of the same sex or if you prefer you can pay a single supplement for a tent just for you. This is US$ 70 (For the entire trek -please note that is for a single tent and an extra porter who will carry a single tent.)
  • Will I need any extra money? YES, so that you can take part in options such as bottled water, drinks on 1st and 3rd night camping, a hot shower on the 1st night (15 soles), the natural hot springs in Aguas Calientes (15 soles),  tips for your trekking staff -guides, cooks and porters, drinks, snacks in Machu Picchu and drinks at lunchtime at Aguas Calientes, etc.  You should take at least 350 -400 Nuevos Soles as emergency money that hopefully you will return to Cusco with!  Also, for the passengers that are concerned about health, it may be prudent on your part to keep in mind that a train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes costs approx US$75 pp (in case you need to leave the trail early, in this rare case a 2nd guide or assistant will help you to take you a lower level and help you to get a train to Aguas Calientes town where we will arrange accommodation and meals until you meet your group, have a tour at Machu Picchu and return by train to Cusco.)
  • Do the guides speak English?  SAS Travel has high standards for our guides. All of our top guides must be educated in the field of tourism, most of them obtained a University degree, first aid assistance and completely fluent in English. Our guides are also one of the most popular aspects of our tours as some of them are historians and archaeologists and are passionate to transmit Incas History.
  • How many people will be in my group?  We require 6 people minimum for our treks, indicated dates on web availability are open groups in which you are welcome to join, Average 10-12 . We can have up to 8 trekkers with one guide and from 9 -16 trekkers we have 2 licensed trekking guides. During low season the groups are more likely to be small and during high season the groups will likely be full. The Park office has a rule in place that limits the number of passengers per 2 guides to 16 persons. If we are getting a lot of requests for a date and there are still a good number of permits available, we can easily open up a second group for the same date.
  • Should I hire an extra porter?  If you have not trekked in altitude before (3,000 meters to 4,215 meters / 9,842.52 feet to 13,828.74 feet) we highly would suggest you organize an extra porter, (70% of travelers hire an extra porter). If you would like to have a porter carry your things is $80.00 for the entire hike for 8 kilos, OR hire a 6 Kg personal porter for US$ 60.00 for the entire trek (then you only need to carry a small daypack with water, camera, snacks and rain gear in case). SAS Travel provides a duffle porter bag at the briefing the night before your hike -please return this bag after your tour. You should bring only what you absolutely need on the hike and store the rest of your belongings in Cusco (in your hotel or Hotel Marqueses -free luggage storage). Unless you have hired an extra porter, you will need to carry your own backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping mattress, clothings, personal staff and water for the day (boiled water is provided from Day 2 at lunchtime -please note that locals sell bottled water and other drinks at 1st and 2nd camp as a way to get some incomes for their families so we recommend you to buy from them to help their families). If you hire a personal porter, bring a small comfortable backpack with a good back support to carry your personal staff such items as your camera, water bottle, snacks (energy bars, dried fruits, sweets, etc) sunscreen, sun-glasses, a fleece or something warm and a rain poncho (during the rainy season or cloudy days) porters do not walk alongside you, your bags and belongings will be at campsite at afternoon. (Please after the hike return our blue duffle bag to your guide or into our office in Cusco).
  • Please note that there are fines and notifications against our company if you give excess weight to your hired porter, so try to under-pack rather than over-pack  -if your bag overweight at the check-in point, items will have to be removed to reduce the weight. If you are considering carrying all your belongings (mat, sleeping bag, clothes and personal items) we suggest bringing a bigger comfortable backpack -only if you are an experienced trekker, experience hiking on the mountain and top physical conditions.
  • B. ON THE TREK.-
  • I am not really an experienced trekker? What if I can’t keep up? How difficult is the Inca Trail?  1st recommendation is to hire a personal porter for 8 Kg, intensify your walks and hikes in a way of training at home, bring or hire trekking poles. Only in extremely rare circumstances does a passenger need to come back early. You just need to remember that you are able to go at a speed that is comfortable for you. Take your time, pace yourself, and enjoy. (One of the guides will always accompany the slow participants in the group help and assist you.
  • The Inca Trail is considered a moderate trek, it is a little difficult on the 2nd day when you reach the 4,200 meters masl. It's not a technical hike but there are a lot of Inca stairs to walk up and down, and the altitude may affect some individuals. The air is very thin which makes it difficult to breathe.  We recommend strongly to hire a personal porter, use trekking poles...enjoy, relax and rest.
  • Are Trekking poles really necessary? For this trek more than any of the treks, we DO recommend the use of trekking poles, especially for those passengers with known knee problems. There are multiple times during the trek that a Trekking pole is handy, be it ascending a mountain or walking down immense sets of Inca stairs. It will help with your balance, security in irregular bleachers and reduce the impact on your knees.  You can purchase rubber tips for metal tips.
  • How long will I be walking every day? How long is the trail?  The total distance is 46 Km/ 28 Miles. This is an approximate breakdown according to our regular campsites: Pickups, Departure points?  Pick up from your hotels from 05:30 am. Meeting departure point at Hotel MARQUESES at 05:45 am.  (Depart from Cusco at 05:45 am).  From Cusco 3 Hrs Drive to Km 82, start of the hike.
  • Day 1:  3-4 hours drive to Km 82. Walk from Km 82 -2600m to Hatun-Chaka 1st Camp -3000m (12 Km to walk  6-7 hours)- 400m to climb.
  • Day 2: Hatun-Chaka  Pacaymayo 2nd Camp -3600m.(Highest point 4,200m)16 km. 8 hours 1,200 m to climb.
  • Day 3: Pacaymayo to Wiñay-Wayna 3rd Camp 2,700m. (12 km to walk. 5-6 hours).  200 m to climb.
  • Day 4: Wiñay-Wayna to Machu Picchu -2400m. (6 Km to walk. 3 hours walk) 200 m to climb.
  • Day 4th wake up around 4.00 am, 2-3 hour to Inti-punku Sun`s Gate, MachuPicchu. The entire trail is about 46 kilometers (27 miles) long from start to finish. For hikers interested in climbing to Huayna Picchu Mt (takes 2 hours) you must reserve and pay in advance so we can purchase your passes and it is after your group tour by 11.00 am.
  • Is Altitude Sickness common?   And how high is the Inca Trail? It's impossible to predict who will be affected by altitude. Your ability to adapt to high altitude is determined by your genetic makeup and has little to do with fitness or health. Most people will have no problems as long as they take the time to acclimatize properly. A full day spent in Cusco (3,399m), take it easy and drink plenty of water is enough for some people but if you can arrange to have minimum 2-3 days drink cups of Coca tea, eat light, no alcohol, in case of any travel disruptions as well then this is what we recommend as there is also so much to do here!.  The highest point you will reach while hiking the Inca Trail is 4200m/13818 ft. on the 2nd Day.
  • What if I am unable to finish the trail? In the scenario that you are unable to finish the trek due to health issues, SAS Travel will do everything in its power to get you to the nearest civilization and get help or transportation to help. If the issue is respiratory or due to altitude, we do carry at least one tank of oxygen on a trek that you will have access to. In extreme cases, a helicopter picks up can be arranged at your own expense. (Travel Insurance reference is required.) There are no refunds in the situation that you are unable to finish though.  Generally if due to altitude sickness people can`t make it over the pass on the 2nd day they come back to Ollantaytambo accompanied by a porter if just mild (or guide if serious) and if they recover from altitude sickness they stay the night here in Ollantaytambo and then take the train to Aguas Calientes the next day ( Day 3) and we look after them in Hostal Viajeros and then they rejoin their group in Machu Picchu early on Day 4 and continue the tour as normal.  The additional costs for this such as train ticket and accommodation is payable by the passenger and usually is between $60-100 total.
  • Can SAS Travel accommodate my dietary needs?  What kind of food will there be?
  • Not to worry, SAS Travel is able to accommodate many types of dietary needs upon request at the time of booking. If you are a vegetarian, or cannot eat gluten or have allergies to certain foods, it will not be a problem. The meals of our chefs are one of the most popular parts of our tours too, and the quality will not be reduced when accommodating your dietary needs. The meals are served buffet style and you are able to choose what you would like to eat. Your guides will let you know what time the meals will be served.  Our cooks prepare excellent high-energy meals appropriate for a trek of this nature. The menu usually includes quinua, cereals and vegetable soups, Beaf Lomo Saltado with rice, chicken casserole, fresh fruit and vegetables and a variety of oatmeal, eggs and other breakfast foods as scramble egg, quinua panqueques.
  • Will I need to bring water? We recommend that you purchase a 2 liters bottle of water to take with you on the first day. On 2nd you can buy water from locals because they provided their campsite and bathroom, they offer hot shower for 15 Soles, we will boil water when is possible so you can refill the same bottle, not recommended to drink water directly from streams or rivers even using water purification -most people get sick not for the altitude rather by drinking not good water. You will be able to buy bottled water, drinks (Gatorate, Cocacola, beers, etc) along the way on Day 1 and Day 2, then again on the afternoon of Day 3, and of course at Machu Picchu (bring small bills in Soles).
  • Are there bathrooms along the way? Along the trail, there are several sites with toilets with running water. Bring a roll of toilet paper. As far as other trash goes, please carry your own trash to each campsite where the porters will pack it up and take it out. Our camping team will install a toilet tent for our group. Leave no trace! Please do not litter.
  • Is it OK to bring toddlers on the trail?If you are thinking of bringing any small children with you, we highly recommend arranging a private tour with us instead of going on a group service departure. That way, you can get the extra attention that you will require from the guide. It should be remembered that it is likely you will have a difficult time as it is, so if you have never done higher altitude trekking with your child before, you’ll want to carefully consider your enjoyment and the enjoyment of the child. Also, it should be kept in mind that the emergency rescue services while on the trek are extremely limited.
  • Is there a chance that my trek will be canceled? There is very little possibility of a cancellation of a trek by the INC (Park Office) even under extreme weather circumstances or even in case of a strike, there will be no cancellation.  The Park office or SAS Travel cannot change the date of a trek if there is a general strike. We do everything possible to ensure you get to the trailhead to start the trek for the permit date and this means that we must have correct contact details as about 4-5 times a year there is a general strike. This means no land transport is allowed to travel and so the night before the trek /strike date we have to gather everyone together and drive to the trailhead area to camp the night before so we make sure that the trek goes ahead.  In the case that a passenger decides to cancel the tour for whatever reason, you will just have to pay US$75 more and we can put you on a train to Aguas Calientes. That way you are still able to use the Machu Picchu entrance join your group for a tour and return train ticket at least.
  • Is the trail still good during the rainy season? Is it safe? The trail is perfectly safe during the rainy season. Some people actually like to go during the rainy season because there are fewer tourists. If you are one who doesn’t mind the rain, then we say ‘Go for it!’ You will just have to bring good rain gear and waterproof boots.
  • What kind of weather can I expect on the trek? Temperatures? During the “rainy season” (1 Dec - 1 May), you could have some rain any day but you can expect that it could rain every day in Feb and could be heavy! Often in Dec and Jan, you may just get some light continual showers or it could be fine and then a heavy afternoon downpour but in truth, you could also have fine days.  At the same time, it will also be noticeably warmer at night. The day times will get up to about 25 degrees Celsius, the low will be about 2 degrees Celsius.  On the other hand, during the “dry season” (June – Nov) the daytimes will seem strikingly like springtime, with bright and sunny skies, but it will be much colder at night. During the daytime, you can expect it to be somewhere in the range of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and at night it will be as low as 0 to -5 degrees Celsius. It is always best to dress in layers during any time of year, really. As you hike, put them on when you feel cold or shed them and put it in your day pack when you get hot.
  • How many trekkers and trek crew are in a typical group? For a group of max 16 trekkers, our typical trekking staff comprise of:  01 guide, 01 assistant guide, 01 cook, 01 assistant cook, 01 general assistant in charge of setting up and organization of safe campsites and 18 porters or carriers.  If the group is 8 or less then just 1 guide, 01 cook, 01 general assistant in charge of setting up and organization of safe campsites and 12 porters or carriers.
  • What is the standard procedure when it comes to tips?Tips for the above-mentioned trekking staff are not included in the price of the trek. Tips are optional  not mandatory. Generally, tips are distributed amongst the trekking staff (except the guide and the assistant guide ) on the third night of the trek at Wiñaywayna camp after the evening meal since these trekking staff will not accompany the group to Machupicchu.
  • Tips for the Cook, Assistant cook, Coordinator & Porters: On the third night at dinner time, someone from the group is usually elected to collect the tips. Please remember to take small bills We recommend that the cook should receive about 50% more than the other trekking staff. The money should be paid directly to each individual or representative of porters rather than given to the guide or cook. Deciding how much to tip is always a difficult and sometimes uncomfortable decision. SAS Travel pays our trek staff fairly and treat them with respect and try to provide good working conditions. We think that a tip should not be used to subsidize a poor wage but should be a way to show the staff that you have enjoyed the trek and appreciated the services that they have provided. The tip should, therefore, be optional and not mandatory. However, if you have enjoyed the service, we recommend that each person in the group contributes between (US$ 25-35 ) to a porters tips “pot” which is then distributed amongst the cook, assistant cook, general assistant and porters. This should ensure that each porter will receive a tip of about US$ 20-25 and the cook around US$ 45-50. Obviously, if you want to tip more please do so. Tips for the Assistant Guide: The assistant guide will accompany the group to Machupicchu and Aguas Calientes, he is in charge of getting the passes for Wayna Picchu climbing. We, therefore, recommend that you tip the assistant guide at lunchtime on the fourth day in Aguas Calientes at lunchtime in Hotel Viajeros. We suggest that each person in the group tips the assistant guide between (US$10-12)  Again, tips are optional, not mandatory and dependent on the level of service provided. Obviously, if you want to pay more please do so.
  • Tips for the Guide: The guide will accompany the group throughout the tour including Machupicchu. We recommend that you tip the guide after the tour in Machupicchu at the time of lunch at Hotel Viajeros in Aguas Calientes  We suggest that each person in the group tips the main guide between (US$12 -15)  Again, tips are optional, not mandatory and dependent on the level of service provided. Obviously, if you want to pay more please do so.
  • SUMMARY:  Like in most American countries, tipping is normal practice. If you have enjoyed the service provided by the trekking team we would recommend bringing between (US$ 45-50 ) to covers tips for the trekking staff (porters, cook and guides). However, if you think that you have received poor service you are under no obligation to pay a tip. The trekking team will soon get the message. Please pay tips in cash and do not pay in kind such as in beers, alcohol drinks etc. We have tried to be as clear as possible about tipping but we understand that this is a complicated issue when many different cultures and lifestyles come together.  (The procedure and amounts listed above have been written in conjunction with our guides and trekking staff. We accept that not all of our clients will be in agreement with this information. It is important that you tip the amount that you feel comfortable with. Please try not to let the procedure stress you or cause anyone to feel badly towards other members of the group who wish to pay less than the recommended amount or decide not to pay a tip at all).Will I be able to witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu? In truth, it is not a typical sunrise. As long as you don´t have too much mist or low cloud then you see the first light illuminating Machu Picchu. It is after dawn though as the sun must rise up over the high mountains surrounding Machu Picchu.
  • How long am I able to stay at Machu Picchu? How I will I get down to Aguas Calientes?
  • You will have a guided tour of the ruins that lasts approximately 2-3 hours, after which time you will have 2-3 hours more to spend on your own. You can climb Huayna Picchu att 11:00 am (reservation and new pay required $85 pp) or just explore. After the guided portion, your guide will give you a bus ticket for the transfer down to Aguas Calientes. You can take the bus anytime you like. We will be serving a buffet lunch in Aguas Calientes town at Hotel Viajeros starting at 1.45 pm so that is something to keep in mind. If you choose to skip lunch, then you just need to be down in time for your train ride at 14:30 pm at the latest. Train leave at 14:55 pm  /  2nd train at 16:22pm
  • What time will I be back in Cusco?You generally, arrive back to Cusco around 7.30 pm -8:00 pm. 4Day/4Night Inca Trail version will be returning by 13:00 Hrs.
  • Can you explain the train service a little more?? Many of our travelers request a later train to climb Wayna Picchu or to visit the natural hot baths (for which the town Aguas Calientes is named). We therefore generally reserve a late afternoon train around  14:55 pm or - 16:22 pm for our travelers. Occasionally it is direct to Cusco, but otherwise, the service is to Ollantaytambo with a private bus transfer onwards to Cusco. Often passengers decide to stay a further night in Aguas Calientes instead of returning on the 4th night. This is fine, and we can coordinate your accommodation, but any changes you would like to make with train tickets must be made in person with Peru Rail in Aguas Calientes with proof of identity (i.e. your original passport). They will charge a fee for change of dates and coach options will be according to availability.

Cusco is still not a big city compared Lima or Arequipa, quite safe, a 10 minutes ride from the airport and you are at the center of Cusco, more than 20 churches, monasteries, and Plazas and most of the travelers found this city very beautiful, with many good restaurants and shops where staff speak English, most people here speak Spanish and Quichua the Inka´s language, official taxis for less than $1.5 per service (3-4 Soles)... then after your great days in Cusco and around you can continue visiting Manu National Park, Jungle trips to Puerto Maldonado, Colca Canyon in Arequipa, Nazca Lines, Paracas Reserve, Ballestas Islands, the Lake Titikaca in Puno or still visit Copacabana, Sun Island, Uyuni Salar in Bolivia.  
  • ALTITUDE or MOUNTAIN SICKNESS, SOROCHE.- Altitude sickness is serious and can ruin your trip. The biggest mistake you can make is to fly directly to Cuzco (3326m/10,910ft) and expect to hike the next day. Give yourself a few days to adjust to the altitude first.  Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), altitude illness, hypobaropathy, or Soroche, is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to the low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude. It commonly occurs above 2,400 meters (approximately 8,000 feet). Acute mountain sickness can progress to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The causes of altitude sickness are not fully understood. The percentage of oxygen in air remains essentially constant with altitude at 21% up until 70,000 feet (21,330 m), but the air pressure (and therefore the number of oxygen molecules) drops as altitude increases consequently, the available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases above 10,000 feet (3,050m). Altitude sickness usually does not affect persons traveling in aircraft because the cabin altitude in modern passenger aircraft is kept to 8,000 feet (2,440 m) or lower.     A superficially related condition is chronic mountain sickness, also known as Monge's disease, occurring only after prolonged exposure to high altitude. An unrelated condition, often confused with altitude sickness, is dehydration, due to the higher rate of water vapor lost from the lungs at higher altitudes.
  • Those who ascend rapidly to altitudes greater than 2500m (8100 ft) may develop altitude sickness. In Peru, this includes Cusco ( 3326m) Machupicchu (2400m) and Lake Titicaca (3820m). Being physically fit offers no protection. Those who have experienced altitude sickness in the past are prone to future episodes. The risk increases with faster ascents, higher altitudes and greater exertion.
  • Symptoms may include headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, malaise, insomnia and loss of appetite. Severe cases may be complicated by fluids in the lungs (high-altitude pulmonary edema) or swelling of the brain  (high-altitude cerebral edema) If symptoms are more than mild or persist for more than 24 hours (far less at high altitudes), descend immediately by at least 500 meters and see a doctor. To help prevent altitude sickness, the best measure is to spend two nights or more at each rise of 1000m. Alternatively, take 125mg or 250mg of acetazolamide (Diamox) twice or three times daily starting 24 hours before ascent and continuing for 48 hours after arrival at altitude. Possible side effects include increased urinary volume, numbness, tingling, nausea, drowsiness, myopia and temporary impotence. Acetazolamide should not be given to pregnant women or anyone with a history of sulfa allergy. For those who cannot tolerate acetazolamide, the next best option is 4 mg of dexamethasone taken four times daily. Unlike acetazolamide, dexamethasone must be tapered gradually upon arrival at altitude, since there is a risk that altitude sickness will occur as the dosage is reduced. Dexamethasone is a steroid, so it should not be given to diabetics or anyone for whom taking steroids is not advice. A natural alternative is ginkgo biloba, which some people find quite helpful.  When traveling to high altitudes, it´s also important to avoid overexertion, eat light meals and abstain from alcohol  Altitude sickness should be taken seriously, it can be life-threatening when severe.

Terms & Conditions

  • 1.- You must advise SAS Travel office staff or guides of any medical problems or allergies. You need to have good physical health and wellbeing. If your health is questionable, then you should consult a doctor. If you are over the age of 69, you will need to present us with a current medical certificate. It is highly recommended to arrive to Cusco a few days before your hike and stay in Cusco at least 3 - 1 nights previous to your hike so that your body is prepared for the altitude.
  • 2.- You must advise your guide if you wish to leave the group or the camping area for independent walks or sightseeing. If you are experiencing any problems with the service of the guide or tour, please advise the guide at that moment so he can resolve any problems ASAP.
  • 3.- You must carry your original passport and valid student card (if applicable) on the trail. If you do not take the correct passport as indicated in your booking and permit documents, the control will annul your permit and refuse your entry to the trail. If for any reason, you organize a new passport after we have purchased your permits, you must send us a copy of your new passport or email the new numbers and bring both of your passport with you, or if this is not possible advise us in writing with a scan of the old passport and your new passport for us to present to the Park controllers with official documentation to avoid problems.
  • 4.- The student US$40 discount for use of student cards is regulated by the park itself, not SAS Travel. All student with ISIC cards are validated by the control of the park and only accepted if you scanned a clear copy of your valid student card through with your deposit at the time of booking and it is confirmed though our agent. A Youth Travel card is not accepted to pay as a student by the Park control.
  • 5.- A personal porter for 8 Kg is included in this tour, at the time of briefing a duffle bag will be given to you so you can pack your items previous to the morning of your hike (Please make sure your duffle bag does not exceed the limit of the weight amount you requested, all hotels can provide you with a scale to weigh your bag.) The rest of your belongings can be stored in your Hotel or you can leave them in our Hotel Marqueses near SAS Travel office.
  • 6.- Every hiker must have and bring a comfortable 20-30 L daypack to carry your personal items. Bring 2 litres of drinkable water for Day 1 (disposable plastic bottles, plastic bags are forbidden). Our crew will offer you boiled water at Lunch time on 2nd Day until the end of the hike, locals sell bottled water and drinks on route and campsites on Day 1 and 2. Hot showers are available on the 1st campsite for 15 Soles (if wanted). At the campsite we will offer you hot water for washing/cleaning purposes.
  • 7.- If you are a single traveller you are obliged to pay single supplement for a hotel room but if you do not require a single tent on the Inca Trail hike and are happy to share, then you can let us know at the time of booking and be exempt of this US$70 fee.(This depends if there is someone else willing to share the tent that is the same gender.)
  • 8.- Change of dates is not possible after a permit has been purchased and processed. It is non transferable nor refundable. The deposit will be forfeited and penalties costs will be applied. Please note that we do this because we are prohibited to re-sell your spot/permits after you have cancelled. However you can use part of the permit for Machu Picchu admission in other tours such as Lares, Salkantay, or train tours to Machu Picchu on the indicated reserved dates.
  • 9.- This 7 Day tour with Inca Trail hike 4 Days /3 Nights includes transport return to Cusco. Our preference would be a train departure at 15.00 Hrs train to Ollantaytambo plus a private bus to Cusco or direct train from Aguas Calientes station to Cusco, on Day 4 of the hike.The group will arrive to Machu Picchu by 07:00 am then have 5-6 hrs approx for a guided tour and free time. By 13:00 Hrs we will board a bus down to Aguas Calientes for a last group lunch and wait for the train return back to Cusco. On days like Inti Raymi, Independence day and easter there may be some slight changes for which we appreciate your understanding.
  • 10.- If you decide not to go, or you become ill or injured on the trail and are unable to continue, a porter or assistant will accompany you back to a safe area with emergency assistance at Ollantaytambo town, from here you can continue by train to Aguas Calientes town and meet the group on the 4th morning (train cost will be at your expenses US$70-80 approx). Helicopter air lift and medical assistance are paid at the expense of the passenger, therefore we recommend to have Travel Insurance. If you fail to complete the hike due to illness we will assist you to meet your group at Machu Picchu to recommence your tour there, although there will be no refund from the original payment, we will however present you with a document to certify your illness and this can be used to present to your Travel Insurance company. If this is the case a hotel in Aguas Calientes, meals during this time, tour in Machupicchu, bus down to Aguas Calientes and train return to Cusco with the group will be provided by SAS Travel with no extra cost, except the train to Aguas Calientes which costs US$ 70-80 pp and the bus up to Machu Picchu which costs US$14.
  • 11.- Huayna Picchu Mountain Entry.- The entrance ticket for this trail is not included in the hike, it is optional due to limited spots,therefore you must reserve and pay in advance US$85.00 per adult / US$ 45.00 with student valid card, you must send us a copy of your students card at the time of booking. This ticket will be for the second turn at approx 11:00 after your guided tour of Machu Picchu. In case Huayna Picchu Mountain tickets are sold out the alternative is a walk to Montaña (same costs apply).
  • 12.- Tips for the porters, cooks and guides.($50-60) is not mandatory but it is a tradition. You need to have your own money for bottled water or other drinks if wanted along the route, Machupicchu and Aguas Calientes. Emergency money of at least 300 soles. Total per person ($150 -$180) approximately.
  • 13.- Travel Insurance.- We recommend that full Travel Insurance is taken, which includes cover, under certain circumstances, against the loss of deposit or cancellation charges. Please note that no reimbursements are given when cancellations occur or for any unused services. Get a one week insurance with Nomads Insurance.
  • 14.- When transportation strikes are declared in Cusco without previous notice, the entire group will need to depart Cusco the night before of the tour and do camping near the beginning of the trail to avoid the risk of cancelation of your tour.(We recommend you to come to the SAS Travel office when you arrive to Cusco, to make sure that everything is ready and we ask you to bring your original passport with you.) We recommend to arrive to Cusco a few days prior to your tour.
  • 15.- In extreme cases when Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is declared closed for safety reasons SAS Travel can replace your trek with an alternative trek such as 4 day Lares trek or 4 day Salkantay or Choquequirao trek and your booking deposit and payment money will be used for this, There will be no refund from the original payment, or other train trips to Machu Picchu.
  • SAS Travel will take all reasonable care in providing service to our clients to avoid accident, illness or loss of personal property and will only employ suitably qualified staff. We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. SAS Travel cannot however be responsible for any action or event that was unforeseeable or unavoidable. We also cannot be responsible for improper acts by clients or other third party. You are totally responsible for your own personal property and rented equipment from our company.
  • SAS Travel does not take responsibility for additional costs due to unfavorable weather conditions, natural catastrophe, political strikes, road strikes, accidents, illness, injury, loss of personal items, etc. It is the client responsibility to carry a Travel Insurance to cover these types of events. We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.
  • CANCELATION MADE BY CLIENT:
  • Cancelation of tour once a reservation has been confirmed incurs a loss of the booking deposit US $400.00 pp plus cards or Paypal surcharges. These are calculated from the day written notification is received by SAS Travel.
  • a- Cancellation of tour once a permit has been purchased and confirmed incurs a loss of US$ 400.00 a Non-refundable Booking deposit.
  • b- Cancellation of tour within 60 Days to 41 Days of departure incurs a loss of 70% of total cost of the tour. You must pay online using your reservation code.
  • c- Cancellation of tour within 40 Days to 35 Days of departure incurs a loss of 80% of total cost of the tour. You must pay online using your reservation code.
  • d- Cancellation of tour within 34 days to 15 Days of departure incurs a loss of 90% of total cost of the tour. You must pay online using your reservation code.
  • e- Cancellation of tour within 14 Days to 72 hours of departure incurs a loss of total tour cost. You must pay online using your reservation code.
  • However we can organize an alternative tour to visit Machu Picchu joining your group and utilizing your train tickets and permits entrance to MP, completing the tour as normal from Aguas Calientes day 4 and discounts in our Hotel Marqueses in Cusco.
  • FINAL PAYMENT:
  • The final balance of your tour will be sent to your email with detailed information. You must pay the full balance of your tour 1 month before the date of your tour departure using any of the payment options indicated in our website or before this date. If you need to amend or add anything to your final confirmation invoice (for example, add equipment, upgrade your hotel in Aguas Calientes, Vistadome Train return etc) you must contact us at least 6 weeks prior to the tour. This is done by contacting our staff at: [email protected]
  • We can then adjust your invoice accordingly and reconfirm the exact balance you need to pay by emailing you that week. You will need to add the 5% credit card commission or 6 % PayPal commission or other fees depending on which payment method you choose.Or pay in US$ cash at our office in Cusco at your arrival.(Payments with cards in our office in Cusco are not accepted).
