Overview

"... The roads of the Incas were the most useful and stupendous works ever executed by man. " Alexander Von Humboldt 1802.
---
The Incas knew astronomy, brain surgery, mathematics, great roads and bridges builders, they were expert farmers, among other things, but the spanish conquerors had the gunpowder, what would America look like today if things had been different ?. How it is possible to feel nostalgia for a world I never knew ? How can a civilization that built this marvel (Macchu Picchu) be destroyed to originate poverty, injustice and slavery.
Cusco -the heart of America. April 1952 Ernesto Che Guevara.
---
It is not surprising that Hiram Bingham quoted from Kipling’s poem ‘The Explorer’ when talking of the lure of the Vilcabamba county. ‘Something hidden! Go and find it! Go and look behind the mountains. Something lost behind the ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!’ -for that virile Edwardian literary style was precisely what he aspired to.
People often say to Bingham: How did you happen to discover Machu Picchu? The answer is, I was looking for the last Inca capital.’ Hiram Bingham already knew that the last Inca capital’, Vitcos, Vilcabamba or Espiritupampa, lay well beyond the Picchu valley. So when his small expedition passed through the valley, only a few days out from Cuzco, they were still at idling speed, playing themselves in
Hiram Bingham 1911 The Lost City of the Incas.
---
Exploring and searching for gold and silver, decades before Bingham, the german explorer Augusto Berns in 1874, had years of residency at -Maquinanayoq or Aguas Calientes, just below the ruins he called -Huacas del Inca, the principal target was Machu Picchu, he sought permission from president Cáceres to excavate more than one site -The tombs of the Inca. Herman Göhring in 1874 described the area as -The fortress of Picchu, as well years later explored by Charles Wiener in 1877, Antonio Raimondi in 1883, Jorge von Hassel in 1904 and Clements Markham in 1910. by Paolo Greer 1996

The Inca Trail is the most famous hike in South America and a must-do and one of the biggest highlights of your trip to Peru. Best known as it treks through a range of spectacular Inca ruins along its path. The stunning scenery spanning through altitudes in the valley from 2700m to mountain passes of 4200m is breath-taking, with views of snow capped mountains. Finally passing through the cloud and rain forest to arrive to the majestic Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu itself. The trek will prove unforgetable not just for the stunning sights but the experiences of being accompanied by the warmth, knowledge and expertise of

Machu Picchu Sanctuary. Located at 2,400 meters above sea level.
This ancient Inca city is one of Peru most precious treasures. It was built in the mid-15th century and it is believed that it was one of the residences of the ninth Inca of Tahuantinsuyo, Pachacútec, although there are also the remains of a sanctuary. Its name means old mountain, and refers to the place where it is located, at about 2,453 meters above sea level, on a rocky premonitory between Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu.
Currently, this Inca jewel is one of the tourist centers of the country. Travelers go to Aguas Calientes by train, them board a 30 minutes bus to reach the top of the citadel... a magical and marvelous place, others more adventurous and intrepid -hike in 4 Days the famous Inca Trail route that Hiram Bingham, the Yale professor, popularized at the beginning of the 20th century. The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is considered one of the seven new wonders of the modern world and has been declared a World Heritage Site in 1983.
