1 Feb 2010 - Machupicchu and Inca Trail Situation.
Dear Friends,
I´m sure you are all aware that there have been disastrous affects for so many people here in Peru ( Machupicchu, Cusco, Puno, Huancavelica) In Cusco specifically due to the constant rains we have experienced over these past weeks causing landslides and flooding along the Urubamba river areas, affecting seriously part of the railway line between Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu and Ollantaytambo and declaring the temporarely closure of Machupicchu and Inca Trail until access and safety are completelly repaired. 3- 4 weeks according to INC (Machupicchu Park Office)
Evacuations .- Helicopter Evacuations of more than 4,000 people have been successful thanks to the promt response from Defense Ministry and central gobernment and relief efforts are continuing and the clean up and repairs are in progress.
Train Company .- Peru rail, the train company access to Aguas Calientes from Ollantaytambo has requested people to be patient as they are trying to consolidate a time frame for access to Aguas Calientes by transport and have outlined a few options. I have pasted their letter below for those who can translate into English but I have put a rough translation underneath
Inca Trail Permits .- The INC has adamantly indicated that the inca trail is not canceled for March.. the INC will not refund any permits as they say there will definitely be good access from Aguas Calientes via Santa Teresa back to Cusco by March. This is the area that the train line and bus transport combination should be able to repair first . This is a longer trip out though but has been used regularly even this year by other companies. The walk from Aguas Calientes to the Hydoelectrica is 2 hours (approx 11 kms) and from the Hydoelectrica to Santa Teresa is also around 2 hours ( apporx 9 kms) so total 4 hours walking time. Then the bus travel time from Santa Teresa to Cusco is 7- 8 horas (approx 245 kms.) Therefore if this option is the only still available from the 1st of March it will be longer and most likely mean travel time through the night. What we recomend is to spend the 4 th day in Machu Picchu and stay the night in Viajeros Hostel in Aguas Calientes and depart the following morning with your groups guide accompanying you. We usually charge $25 per person for this overnight option including dinner and breakfast but as it is part of the alternative tour due to the situation we will only charge $20 per person for people using a room for 2 people with private bathroom and this includes breakfast. $15 per person for people sharing a room that accomodates 3 people with private bathroom and breakfast. Dinner can be purchased in Viajeros or at other places in Aguas Calientes to try and encourage other restuarants to be able to continue with their busineses.
- If your interest is still hike this wonderful trek in March, April,May or later on we remind you that permits granted by INC for Inca Trail are limited as every year, and we recommend that you register and book as early as possible, since part of the spots in early March and April are sold out , please see: http://www.sastravelperu.com/contact/reservas.html
Alternative Train Return from Aguas Calientes .- The other information is that Peru rail is aiming to be able to fix a length of track from Aguas Calientes towards Ollantaytambo but only as far as necessary to allow small buses to transport from that point on to Ollantaytambo and then we can transport as usual passengers from there to Cusco. This of course would be much quicker and very close to what we normally do now with passengers only using train as far as Ollantaytambo and taking bus connection from there.
Cancellation of Inca Trail tour .- The problem with people cancelling March Inca trail is that much of the deposit would be lost as if a group of 16 reduces to a group of 6 due to people cancelling then the companies will be all loosing way too much more money but still needing to honor taking people in who do not cancel and so part of the deposits will also need to cover that!
We are very sorry that the route out of Aguas Calientes will most probably be different for at least the trekkers booked for early March but hope you will be able to appreciate all that is going on and the new experiences that have arisen because of it and anything you can do to help those who have lost so much would be greatly appreciated. Of course the people of Cusco rely on tourism anyway and now when so many who are trying to rebuild there lives may be able to benefit from people returning to areas that were affected this will be a very possitive assistance. Yesterday the Sacred Valley tour was able to get to visit Pisac as well. We go from Cusco to Chincheros, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo through the Valley to Pisac and back the same way. People both tourists and locals were so greatful that the famous market is running as normal and so soon after the damage so it is worth needing a bit of extra time to help people directly as well.
Can I still visit Cusco .- Cusco itself is a gem to visit, the central area of Cusco is intact, with amazing Inca temples as Koricancha and many sites such as Saqsayhuaman, Tambomachay,Qenqo and Puicapucara nearby the city plus the many nice plazas with spanish style churches in colonial architecture, sectors as San Blas, Nazarenas , San Cristobal, are very nice places to visit, the Sacred valley tour visiting Chincheros, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and famous Pisac, tours to South Valley to see Tipon, Piquillaqta, Andahuaylillas, Tours to Maras , Moray Salineras, Tipon , Andahuaylillas, Horse back riding , Mountain Bike and River Rafting, etc
Treks Available from March .- For sure things will return to normal for our different Treks around Cusco in early March when rain season stop; trek to Choquequiraw, trek to Salkantay Mountain, trek to Ausangate, Trek to Lares Valley ( 3 different routes )Trek to Tipon, Huchuy Qosqo, Patabamba Huchuy Qosqo, Chincheros, Trek to Tambomachay to Huchuy Qosqo, etc etc.
If you have any queries just let me know but your patience is so appreciated.
Most Sincerely,
David Quintana
